 In A New Light

combines lectures and film screenings to help you get more out of movies.

We are currently finalising our programme for 2018, and details will be published shortly. Like last year, the events will be on Wednesday afternoons.

The course consists of 6 lectures, each lecture being followed by a movie screening. The lecture starts at 1.30 and we screen the movie at 2.45. This is followed by a Q&A/discussion, and we finish by 5pm. Dates for 2018 are Sept 5th, 26th, Oct  10th, 24th, Nov 7th, 21st.

In the lectures,

we look at the techniques used by the great film-makers to tell a story,

we look at some of the distinctive cinematic styles, such as film noir, expressionism and neo-realism, and

we consider how cinema both reflects and influences the cultural and political status quo.

Each lecture is followed by the screening of a movie which illustrates and enriches the lecture content.
